The Bruce Trail – Day 13 & 14

Dates: Sept. 20 – 21, 2025

Locations: Sleswick > Limehouse Conservation Area > Mt. Nemo Conservation Area

Distance hiked: 90.2 km

The trails in Caledon on a Saturday were overwhelmingly busy.

It was impressive to see the Toronto skyline from the roads I walked along, knowing I had started all the way up in Tobermory.

My parents met me in Limehouse and brought me dinner. It was such a nice surprise with so much amazing food – I was in heaven! After such long stretches of solitude, it was really nice to spend time with familiar faces. It was the emotional and caloric boost I needed to make it through my last few days.

Day 14 was a weird day. While I was hiking through a stretch of forest one morning, I almost got attacked by a dog. It jumped out of its enclosure and bolted towards me barking aggressively. It was really scary. Thankfully it left me alone as I slowly backed away. As soon as I was out of eyesight, I kicked my walking into high gear.

There was a point where I had to duck below hydrowires that were dangling in trees and strewn on the ground in order to follow the trail’s continuation onto the road. I assumed they weren’t live, but walking so closely past them went against all my instincts.

The trail became increasingly urbanized. I passed below the 401 and the noise from those cars accompanied me for most of the day.

As the sun started setting, I found a decent spot to camp on Mt. Nemo. The forest felt strangely ominous ad silent – a stark contrast to the busy birds and chipmunks from the morning. The sky looked hazy and grey. An hour after I’d set up my tent, strong gusts of wind started pommeling the treetops and rain came pouring down. Thunder and lightening crackled through the near sky. Out of all the places to be, being on a mountain didn’t feel ideal. I was grateful to awake the next morning to find that my tent fared surprisingly well.
